Magic as taught by the Church of Bahamut
Metaphysics
Magic is the physical manifestation of the will of the Dragons. In the hands of a priest, this is the Will
of God.
Theoretical bonuses/restrictions
- Bahamut wishes his children to be well and happy. All Clerics of the One True Faith are at +2 to
case spells from the colleges of Healing, Knowledge and Protection.
- Since the gods are dragons, His Clerics also receive +2 on spells associated with dragons: the Col-
leges Air and Fire.
- Dead is dead -- there can and should be no alterring that. Therefor: Clerics of Bahamut find it
impossible to cast Resurrection as well as any spell from the Necromantic College.
- "Blessed" advantage may be substituted for "Magery".
Moral restrictions
Free Will is an imperative handed down from the Creator to all her Creations. All those spells which
impede Free Will are evil and to be shunned. Clerics of Bahamut are never taught, and should actively
avoid, spells from the Colleges of Mind, Illusion, and Comm/Emp. (Notice, this does not say that the
school is incapable of it, only that people are not taught it.)
Restrictions by tradition
- Since the time of St. Martin, spells of the College of Fire have been avoided. See St. Martin's Renunci-
ation.
- Spells of a type nor previously listed are available to Clerics of Bahamut as Bahamut Wills It.
- Over time, Clerics of Bahamut have tended to concentrate almost exclusively on the Favored Colleges.
Other things can be found -- if you know where to look. But, the vast majority of priests will only know
spells from those colleges.
- This tendancy to teach and study on a narrow band of spells has produced a good proficiency in those
colleges. The Healing College is understood as deep into the prereq tree as you want to go. Likewise,
Protection and Knowledge. The "neutral" colleges are known fairly well at low levels and get more difficult
to find as you get deeper in the chain.
Outward signs
- You have to be a priest in good standing -- isn't that enough? Notice that this is "in good standing with
your diety" nor necessarily "in good standing with the Church". Though, for some characters, these two
things might not be distinguishable.
- Different orders teach different colleges.
- All spells are cast in Old Wyrmish -- the antithesis of the Loquacious Hermit example: low in tone, loud
and harsh.
Spell lists/programs
As above, finding someone to teach you any spell from the favored colleges is easy. Similarly, there is a
good chance that you will be able to find a teacher for the Light/Darkness colleges. Anything outside that,
get ready to justify.
