Narrator: (an encampment on the outskirts of the capital of McMannon)
A small ceremony is taking place. Jhereg dressed in his trademark black and silver is holding court. A silver circlet circles his brow, reminiscent of the crown that a prince might wear. First one man and then another kneel and swear fealty to their new lord.
Jhereg:
James Albert Ridenour and Roger David d'Chieri on this day you have sworn before Bahamut and this assembled company to serve and obey me as your liege lord. I accept your oaths as I swear mine in return.
Both of you have served me faithfully in these times of troubles. I grant each of you the title of Baronet and these lands to rule in my name.
[He hands each of them the documents granting them their titles and lands. Both his signature and that of the Duchess of McMannon figure prominently on both documents.]
Narrator:
James Albert Ridenour is the last living son of the Baronet d'Ridenour and the only heir to the family name. His family was all killed during the recent civil wars by followers of the Regency Council. A skilled warrior and leader of men he had the misfortune of backing the wrong side when the Regency Council came to power. It cost him his lands and all of his family including his wife and infant son. Getting him away from the capital was the only way to avoid a continuing blood feud. He commands most of the men that follow Jhereg.
Roger David d'Chieri is a callow youth of seventeen. An embarrassment to his father, and one of many younger sons, it was deemed prudent to send him with Jhereg to make a man of him. His father was one of Jhereg's chief supporters and also has managed to gain the Duchess McMannon's favor. His words to Jhereg were to "Make a man of him or at least let him die trying".
Mitch:
Neil, obviously Roger is headed for the axe, let me know is this fits your plans.
