Magic as taught by secular, draconic mages
Metaphysics
This is magic as taught to humanity by the Dragons. Really and truly,
it is the same thing as what the priests are doing. Many mages, and
all of the Helm mages will fall into this category. The difference
is that these folks will insist that you don't have to be an
ordained minister to do it. That's where the var- ious charges of
heresy and witchcraft come from -- people who are not priests doing
things that priests think they have an exclusive right to.
Theoretical bonuses/restrictions
- Dead is dead -- there can and should be no alterring that.
Therefore: Clerics of Bahamut find it impossible to cast
Resurrection as well as any spell from the Necromantic College.
- The +'s above no longer apply, under the assumption that this
person is not an ordained priest.
Moral restrictions
Mages, being in general smart people, have learned to avoid the
spells which are the exclusive domain of priests. Healing and the
elementals fall into this category. Very hard to find anyone to
teach you these, because Darwin got all the people who were free
with these spells long ago.
Restrictions by tradition
After years and years of persecution, some sorts of spells are lost,
others are just difficult to locate. Enchantment is lost entirely.
Meta and mind are virtually so.
Outward signs
All spells are cast in Old Wyrmish -- the antithesis of the
Loquacious Hermit example: low in tone, loud and harsh.
Spell lists/programs
- As above, finding someone to teach you can be very tricky. You
have to make sure they are trust- worthy before you can tell you
what you want; and they likewise you. Touchy subject, that. This is
easier at the Helm.
- No clothing or such is required. Let's face it, when you have the
whole Church out after you, advertising that you are a mage is a
bad idea.
- The tendancy here is for spells which are low in the prereq chain
to be fairly easy to find. Ones more than about 3 hops in force a
story. Always remember that the systematic elimination of mages over
the years has kept the life expectancy down low enough that folks
don't usually get the chance to research deep into spell chains
before becoming the guest of honor at a Marshmellow Roast.
