Magic as taught by Sgacity

Metaphysics

People who discuss theology and world views with Sgacity tend to come away dazed, confused, and absolutely convinced that she is off her rocker. But, she is absolutely convinced of it.

Ultimately, we are all just passing through on our way to something bigger and better. Take the Hindu notion of Migration of the Soul and apply it here. As Fawn once said, "A thousand lives and a thou- sand names." We are all on a road to someplace else. The dragons are further along the road than we are. But, eventually, we will be where they are and they will be, well, who knows where.

You are god. And so am I, and so is she, and so is he, and so are they, and so is a bird and so is the worm the bird is about to eat, and so is.....Just some of us realize it and some of us don't.

A mage is further along the Golden Path than other people. They know who and what they are -- even if they don't admit it.

As little godlings, we are all responsible for the world around us. You make it good or make it bad with every action, every spell. You have to live here too, so make it a good place to be.

Ever read "Stranger in a Strange Land"?

Theoretical Restrictions

Folks paying close attention here will notice the parallel between Sgacity's point of the and the Elven one. Let's treat this school as a cousin of Elven Magic. (Makes plenty of sense given history, eh?) Theoretical restrictions given there apply here. b) Given the particular bent of mind that comes into play here, this school gets a +2 on things associated with creation: illusion, earth, water, make/break.

You must have knowledge of what you are working on. You cannot create what you don't understand. So, in order to cast a spell, you have to be able to visualize it accurately. Anything which you have not personally seen is at a -3. Harsher penalties are possible, depending on just how far the thing is from your frame of reference.

Moral Restrictions

Sgacity is the ultimate pacifist. She never wants to harm another person, if it can at all be avoided. If you don't have Pacifism when you start studying with her, you will before you are finished. Spells which do direct physical harm are at -4. (See also previous elven notes on "getting into that frame of mind.") b) Sgacity does not teach Fire spells at all.

Traditional Restrictions

Mind spells are available. But, the primary teacher finds them distasteful. You can learn through sleep and forget (permanent), but not much deeper. These are things you do to save your skin without harming others. Not things done lightly.

Outward Signs

The Foundation bylaw about periodic good deeds is built right into Sgacity's teaching style. Actually, it was this practice and beleif of hers which became the Foundation bylaw.

Spell lists/programs

The first spells learned are always illusions. They are harmless, and teach resourcefulness. After that, we get into the things with real-world effects.
